Frequent Asked Questions

1. What is clinical psychology?

Clinical psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of emotional, behavioural, and mental health difficulties. Clinical psychologists use evidence-based psychological therapies to help individuals improve coping, functioning, and overall wellbeing.

2. What issues can a clinical psychologist help with?

A clinical psychologist can assist with:

  • Anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety)
  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Stress and burnout
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Self-esteem and identity concerns
  • Personality-related difficulties
  • Chronic pain adjustment
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Parenting challenges

If you are unsure whether therapy is suitable for your concern, you may schedule an initial consultation to discuss further.

3. What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist?

  • A clinical psychologist provides psychological assessment and therapy but does not prescribe medication.
  • A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication and manage psychiatric conditions medically.

In some cases, collaborative care between both professionals is recommended.

4. What happens during the first session?

The first session is typically an assessment session. The clinical psychologist will:

  • Understand your current concerns
  • Explore relevant background information (family, medical, psychological history)
  • Clarify goals for therapy
  • Discuss a preliminary treatment plan

It is a collaborative and confidential discussion designed to understand you comprehensively.

5. How long does each session last?

A standard therapy session typically lasts 45–60 minutes.

6. How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on:

  • Nature and severity of concerns
  • Therapy goals
  • Frequency of sessions
  • Client readiness and engagement

Short-term therapy may range from 6–12 sessions, while more complex concerns may require longer-term work.

7. Will therapy affect my job or career?

No. Therapy is confidential and independent from your employer unless you are attending under a corporate mental health program that requires reporting (which will be clarified beforehand).

Seeking therapy does not go on employment records.

8. Do I need a referral to see a clinical psychologist?

No referral is required unless specified by insurance providers or corporate panels.

9. Do you offer online therapy?

Yes, online therapy sessions are available via secure video platforms. Online therapy is suitable for clients who prefer flexibility or are unable to attend in person.

10. What is your cancellation policy?

Clients are required to provide at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations may incur a fee.
